The City of Palm Desert is making innovative changes to how residents choose their City Council.

Beginning with the November 2020 City Council election, the City will have four council seats that are elected at-large and one council seat that is elected from a new downtown district. This new form of local representation is the result of a legal settlement that brings the City into compliance with the California Voting Rights Act (CVRA).

On April 16, 2020, the City Council adopted a map defining the boundaries of the new district.

 PD Map NDC7

This map adoption followed extensive outreach to receive public input. The City agreed to general parameters to achieve CVRA compliance through the settlement, but the community was able to provide input to help the City Council define the districts’ final boundaries. This outreach included two community open houses and a total of five public hearings (some held virtually due to the coronavirus) with opportunity for public comment. The Council unanimously adopted the final map on April 16, 2020.
