In addition to her service on the Palm Desert City Council, Jan Harnik serves on the Coachella Valley Association of Governments (CVAG) Executive Committee, Coachella Valley Conservation Commission, and CVAG's Transportation Committee.
Additionally she is a member of the board of the Southern California Association of Governments, serving on the Executive Committee, the Regional Council, and the Transportation Committee. She also serves on the Riverside County Transportation Commission (RCTC) and RCTC’s Budget and Implementation Committee as well as with the Executive Committee of the Greater Palm Springs Convention and Visitors Bureau.
Jan also serves on the executive board for the Coachella Valley Economic Partnership (CVEP), the Palm Springs Art Museum's Board of Trustees, and is a board member of the Girlfriend Factor – an organization dedicated to helping disadvantaged women re-enter the work force or the education system.
She is past president of the Palm Desert High School Foundation, a non-profit corporation supporting academic excellence at Palm Desert High School. She has worked with the organization since 2002, helping to spearhead multi-year efforts to raise funds and to distribute resources to support and improve students’ academic performance.
Jan is also a member of Palm Desert Noon Rotary Club and the Palm Desert Chamber of Commerce.
Recognizing the value of volunteerism and the value and increased quality of life it brings to our community, Jan serves as chair of the Senior Inspiration Awards for Riverside County Fourth District Supervisor John Benoit. The Senior Inspiration Awards honors our communities’ seniors, our unsung heroes, who have chosen to give their effort, expertise and countless hours of their time, to making our community the wonderful place to live that it is.
In the private sector, Jan works as the manager of a professional office building. Past work experience includes owning a golf equipment rental business in Palm Desert and working for six years at Indian Ridge Country Club as Director of Membership.
She moved to the Coachella Valley in 1977 and has lived in Palm Desert for the past 17 years.
Jan and husband Brian have four daughters, all of whom attended Palm Desert High School. Their daughters have graduated from U.C. Santa Barbara, Cal State Fullerton, U.C. Riverside and Cal Poly Pomona. Jan’s hobbies include early morning work-outs, hiking desert hillsides, nutrition and cooking, and gardening.
