Anyone staying in a hotel in the City of Palm Desert, "is subject to and shall pay a tax in the amount of eleven (11) percent of the rent charged by the operator or otherwise payable by the transient, The tax constitutes a debt owed by the transient to the city, which is extinguished only by payment to the operator or to the city." Operators of hotels are required to have a Transient Occupancy Tax Operator Permit. Operators are required to submit monthly return form, provided to them from the City of Palm Desert Finance Department, and remit any tax amounts collected to the City.
