The Department of Building and Safety is dedicated to providing the highest level of code compliance, inspection services, and plan review to every architect, engineer, developer, contractor, business, and property owner that resides or works within our community. The Department strives to demonstrate fairness, equality, and the highest standard of professional ethics in providing our services while enforcing state construction laws and local ordinances that protect our citizens. The City of Palm Desert adopted its first building code in 1973. Any structure built since that date (with some minor exceptions) is required to have a permit issued before work is started. The specific adoption and amendments are listed in the Palm Desert Municipal Code.
NEW 2019 CALIFORNIA
BUILDING STANDARDS CODE
Effective January 1, 2020, the new 2019 California Building Standards Code will take effect.
In compliance with State law, the California Building Standards Commission (CBSC) revises and updates T24, California Code of Regulations (CRR) every three years. The Building Standards Commission has adopted the 2019 Edition of the California Building Standards Code, which is also known as the California Code of Regulations, Title 24 (CCR, T-24). The 2019 California Codes include the California Building Code, the California Plumbing Code, the California Mechanical Code, the California Electrical Code, the California Residential Code, the California Green Building Standards Code, and the California Fire Code. The City of Palm Desert, has adopted Ordinance 1351 with the effective date of January 1, 2020.
