Residents Invited to Apply to Serve on City Council
The City of Palm Desert encourages residents who wish to serve their community to apply for an opening on the Palm Desert City Council.
At the City Council’s September 9 meeting, the Council will begin considering how to fill the vacancy created by the recent death of longtime City Councilman Richard S. Kelly. The vacancy is for the remaining two years of Mr. Kelly’s term. Applicants must be Palm Desert residents and registered voters.
Government code requires the Council to appoint someone or call an election by September 20, 2010. Given this narrow time-frame, City staff is beginning a provisional application process prior to the September 9 meeting to allow time for a thorough process that includes interviews.
The City Clerk’s Office will begin accepting applications at 8 a.m. on Tuesday, September 7, and continue until noon on Monday, September 13. Applications for City Council are available by clicking here or may be picked up at City Hall. Applications may include a resume with the total submission not to exceed five pages. Council Members will select candidates to interview from all submitted applications by September 14 at 1 p.m. At that time, the City Clerk’s Office will begin contacting selected candidates to schedule interviews. Interviews will take place September 15 through September 18, if necessary. At the City Council meeting on Monday, September 20, the Council will decide whether to nominate candidates to fill the vacancy or call a special election. The time of the September 20 meeting will be determined at the Council’s regular meeting on Thursday, September 9.
The Palm Desert City Council is comprised of five members, elected at large to four-year terms. Council members are charged with representing the public and governing according to the City's Charter. The Council also oversees the affairs of the City's Redevelopment Agency, as well as its Financing, Housing, and Parking authorities. Regular council meetings are held the second and fourth Thursdays of every month. Meetings convene in the Council Chamber at City Hall, 73-510 Fred Waring Drive. Meetings begin at 3 p.m. for closed session and at 4 p.m. for regular session and public hearings.
Completed applications can be submitted to the City Clerk's office at City Hall or via fax at 760-340-0574. For more information, please call the City Clerk's office at 760-346-0611.
