Palm Desert Celebrates Building Safety Month

Post Date:04/27/2010
During an earthquake, safe building construction quickly becomes a top priority. But when the shaking stops, it is easy to forget just how important building safety is. Fortunately, the staff at the City of Palm Desert’s Department of Building and Safety think about it every day.

Throughout May, the City of Palm Desert will be celebrating Building Safety Month to increase awareness about the critical importance of building and designing safe and sustainable structures. During the event, City staff will be providing informational pamphlets, handouts, and activity books for kids at the Building Department counter and answering the public’s building safety questions.

Each week focuses on a different theme with fun and educational activities. Weekly themes include: Energy and Green Building; Disaster Safety and Mitigation; Fire Awareness and Safety; and Backyard Safety.

First observed in 1980, Building Safety Week annually raises public awareness of critical safety issues affecting every person, regardless of age or occupation. For the first time this year, the International Code Council and International Code Council Foundation have expanded Building Safety Week into a month-long campaign.
