Student Art and Essay Contest Entries on Display

Post Date:03/31/2010
Essays, individual artworks, and murals created by Palm Desert students will be on display April 1 through May 28 at the Palm Desert Community Gallery as part of the 2010 Student Art and Essay Contest.

Now in its 25th year, the Contest is a favorite tradition in Palm Desert schools, encouraging students to discover and display their talents in writing and art.

In January, more than 2000 students in grades K through 12 were challenged to write an essay or create art reflecting this year’s theme, “Palm Desert: Past, Present, Future.”

The colorful and thought provoking results of the students’ work will be judged by the Mayor and members of the Art in Public Places Commission with all first, second, and third place winners receiving ribbons. The winning entries will be announced at an awards ceremony at 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday, May 5, at the Visitor Center.

First place winners in the essay and individual artwork categories receive savings bonds. First place winners in the mural category, in which the artwork was created by an entire class, will receive a cash award. Schools achieving 100% participation will have their names placed on a Perpetual Trophy and receive a cash award. Best of Show and Mayor’s awards will also be presented.

The Palm Desert Community Gallery, located in the Visitor Center, at 72-567 Highway 111, is open 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily. For more information, please call 760-346-0611, ext. 663.
