Make Pool Safety A Priority

Post Date:04/30/2019 8:30 AM

Are You Watching Me Drowning PreventionAlthough it is 100% preventable, drowning is the leading cause of accidental injury-related death for children ages 1-4 in Riverside County.

Nearly 90% of all drownings and near-drownings occur in backyard pools or spas. A drowning child can lose consciousness in less than 30 seconds and suffer irreversible brain damage after just four minutes.

To reduce the threat of drowning, remember the ABCs of water safety:

A= Adult Supervision
Assign an adult to keep their eyes on children in the water at all times.

B = Barriers
Ensure that pools are protected by fences, self-closing and self-latching gates, motion sensors, and window and door alarms.

C = Classes
Parents and caregivers should take CPR and First Aid. Swimming courses are recommended for children and adults.
