Elected to the City Council in November 2012, Van Tanner served as a Commissioner for Palm Desert’s Parks and Recreation Commission for 17 years before being asked by City leaders to serve on the Planning Commission. He was a member of the Planning Commission from 2005 until his election to the City Council.
On the Council, Van serves as liaison to The Living Desert Board and The Children’s Discovery Museum of the Desert, as well as the Palm Desert Middle School Governing Board, the CSUSB Palm Desert Campus Advancement Board, and the Regional Access Project Board.
Van’s community service has not been limited to local government. He has volunteered his time on behalf of a number of nonprofits and educational organizations including the Desert Sands Unified School District Building Corporation, the Board of the Family YMCA of the Desert, the Palm Desert Chamber of Commerce Legislative Committee. He also served as the chairperson for the University Planning Committee.
Van has more than 30 years of experience serving as a volunteer coach, policymaker, fundraiser, and administrator in the community. His City Council priorities include:
Working with Council members to manage the City’s financial resources to provide reliable police and fire protection.
Protecting Palm Desert’s hillsides and ridgelines.
Proactively collaborating with community groups to develop excellent after school education and youth recreational programs.
Van and his wife of 42 years, Judy, have raised two children in Palm Desert.
